The climate conditions in the Caribbean islands was not healthy for Europeans. Africans, on the other hand, were just to a hot temperate climate and able to work under extreme weather conditions. Once the cost of transatlantic travel decreased, many Europeans who would not have been able to afford their passage previously, could do so. Thus, one of the main reasons people came over as indentured servants, high passage fares, disappeared.
