Because although a lot of money goes into the finances of the trading journeys and the new crops, the amount of new things that the people were bringing back to Europe were good and were coming in great amounts. Also, whenever a country is colonizing a new land, there is always profit that comes in, so I think this is why people were able to financially support the colonization of new lands; they knew there would be a lot to come back to them if they did.
