It actually depends on what game you are playing. With most games, having one remote means only one person can play. With other games, the players can share the remote by taking turns. For example, think of WiiSports. It is possible for four people to play Bowling with just one controller. They can each take their turn bowling and pass it to the next person.

Sims3 for the Wii is a major disappointment when it comes to multiplayer expectations. There is no split screen. The "multiplayer" section is a series of q&a for lifetime choices. It's truly dumb. The word multiplayer is misleading and I will surely ask more questions before I purchase any game that claims multiplayer. Definitely taking it back.
