here is how I did it - I built a box out of wood big enough to cover the skimmer area . I built mine out of scrap wood. I then covered the edges of the box with foam window seal to give it a good seal. Place the box over the skimmer area. When you start you will only lose the water inside the box and the water pressure will seal the area. Replace skimmer, remove box.

Best guess is that there is a leak in the return pipe from the skimmer to the pump. Sorry to say its probly not a cheap fix. There also could be a leak at the gasket around the skimmer opening.

YES THERE IS A LOT OF TRASH THAT CAN GET IN THE VALVE TO MAKE IT LEAK. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO CLEAN IT FURTHER I found that with the pump running, the pool water was rising as apparently the pump was pulling water out of the ground. This was with the pool water low and the skimmer plugged off in order to try to filter after a bad storm. When I shut off the pump, the pool water went down as the valve did not seat properly.

Bring and keep the water at mid level or slightly higher. Add fill water when the water gets to within about one inch of the bottom of the skimmer. Another reason would be that you have an actual suction leak. Suctions leaks are found in the plumbing and/or pump back to the pool on the suction side of the pump. Sometimes the pump seal can leak and cause this. Check under the base of the pump at a place between the pump basket or pot and the motor. If damp, that may be the cause of the air.
