First of all, you should have been honest with your friends and told them that you knew little about Swimming Pools and asked for specific instructions. Or at least a list of things to do in certain situations.

For a plaster pool: Add the liq. chlor. - up to 3 gal. all at once - if you can not see the bottom. You need to reach 5.0 to 10.0 ppm of chlor on the test kit. Run the filter 24/7 until water has cleared sufficiently. That means that you can see the bottom very clearly without cloudiness. Test the water for chlor and pH balance and adjust. Since you know little of pool care I would call a pool service to correct your problem - pay the service out of your pocket and not ask for reimbursement from your friend. You will have to brush the entire surface of the pool - walls, floor, corners, love seats, steps etc. at least twice per day to keep the algae in suspension until the filter can pick it up then back wash the filter and add new D E unless it is a sand filter. Your chlorine level should be 1.5 to 5.0 after you have finished cleaning the pool of algae. So, you may have to go buy more chlorine 12.5% in strength. Do not use the cheap stuff --- anything less than 12.5% will take more than double the quantity to do the same job. pH on the test should be at 7.6 ppm.
