You may be able to get some temporary results from a stronger product called Plast-Aid, but this is only a temporary fix and does not address the problem of why your pool skimmer is cracked in the first place.
The most common reason pool skimmers crack is the result of pressure from the surrounding deck against the skimmer "vault." The vault is a block of concrete approx. 2' by 2' that encases the skimmer. If there is a crack in the skimmer, the concrete of the vault on the deck may also be cracked (a telltale warning sign) but not always does the crack occur at the visible surface.
There are many landscapers and concrete professionals who lack the skill or experience in working around Swimming Pools and when they pour the decking they fail to incorporate an expansion joint. When the concrete deck heats and cools or even freezes with the temperature changes, the concrete expands and contracts, putting stress not only on your skimmer but in all areas around the pool where there is no expansion joint between the deck and the pool (coping). Other warning signs of this problem can be tiles popping off or coping coming loose, or horizontal cracks along the tile.
To prevent the onset of serious structural issues, it is important that you cut an expansion joint around your skimmer vault and around the pool. The cut should go all the way through the concrete to the dirt underneath, and then the joint should be filled with mastic (kind of like a liquid rubber that hardens) to prevent water penetration. Expansion joints should be refilled with mastic about every 2-3 years or when the mastic shows signs of shrinking and cracking.
If money is an issue at the moment, you can use Plast-Aid to temporarily seal the skimmer cracks, but do not delay cutting an expansion joint. The proper repair is to replace the skimmer (jackhammer the vault, remove the old skimmer, replace with new skimmer, pour a new vault) and make sure you leave room for an expansion joint with your pour. A contractor will charge anywhere between $1,100 and $3,500 for a skimmer replacement depending on who you hire (always hire a licensed contractor) and what part of the country you are.
here is how I did it - I built a box out of wood big enough to cover the skimmer area . I built mine out of scrap wood. I then covered the edges of the box with foam window seal to give it a good seal. Place the box over the skimmer area. When you start you will only lose the water inside the box and the water pressure will seal the area. Replace skimmer, remove box.
Patching a hole in a pool wall where the skimmer is located can be challenging, as the skimmer is crucial for water circulation and filtration. It's essential to use a suitable repair material, such as epoxy or a specialized pool patch, ensuring a watertight seal. However, if the damage is extensive or affects the structural integrity, it's best to consult a professional to assess and repair the skimmer properly. Proper installation and sealing are vital to prevent leaks and ensure the skimmer functions effectively.
To replace a skimmer box with a different size, first, turn off the pool pump and drain the water to below the skimmer level. Remove the existing skimmer box by detaching it from the plumbing and cutting any sealant or adhesive. Install the new skimmer by following the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring it fits securely in the opening and aligns with the existing plumbing. Finally, seal around the edges with appropriate sealant and refill the pool to the proper level before restarting the pump.
W.R. Meadows Co. makes a product called Deck O Seal that will do the job of filling the gap between pool coping and cement deck.
To effectively repair cracks in a concrete driveway using cement, follow these steps: Clean the crack thoroughly with a wire brush and water. Apply a concrete bonding agent to the crack to help the new cement adhere. Mix the cement according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fill the crack with the cement mixture, ensuring it is level with the surrounding surface. Smooth the surface with a trowel and let it cure according to the cement's drying time. Seal the repaired area with a concrete sealer to protect it from future damage.
To cut holes in the liner for an above-ground pool skimmer, first, ensure the skimmer is properly positioned and marked according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a utility knife or a sharp blade to carefully cut along the marked lines, making sure to create a clean, precise opening. It's important to cut slowly to avoid tearing the liner and to wear gloves for safety. After cutting, install the skimmer according to the instructions to ensure a proper seal and prevent leaks.
Well, you are well on your way to prematurely replace your pool heater. The pump seal is the next or maybe the first to go. You have not done the pool finish any good either. Let's see then there is the light fixture. The acid has etched all metal and plaster. Why would you pour any pool chemical directly into the skimmer other those that direct you to do so? k
To fix a crack in a foundation wall, you can use epoxy injections or hydraulic cement to fill the crack. First, clean the area around the crack and remove any loose debris. Then, apply the chosen material into the crack and smooth it out. Allow it to dry and cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. This should help seal the crack and prevent further damage to the foundation.
There are now a variety of ways to seal cracks, depending on the use of the concrete. -ie, if it is just a footpath or a house floor or a garage floor. There are new epoxy concrete mixes, caulks, thin set cements and others. A wide range can be found in Home Depot.
I'm asssuming your talking about the one on your skimmer basket. They swell with age to help keep a good seal. This means you have to replace them once in a while but that's better than a leak.
