One can justify anything when one is in a position of power. Initially they didn't justify their actions, as they became wealthier as a result they became more educated and as a result felt more empathy for their victim. At this point they started to present themselves as having the wellbeing of their colonies at heart describing people as in such ways as the white mans burden etc and inferior or in need of Europe's civilising influence. The USA finally played a large part in breaking up the colonial system because they were unable to profit from the status quo

Herbert Spencer stated that the strongest civilizations would conquer the weak.
In 1532 a noted legal scholar wrote that it could not, and Native American's today still believe this. However the majority, white people, ignore these things or find arbitrary reasons to justify the actions (akin to someone trying to justify the enslavement of blacks in early American history).
Europeans justified using Africans as slaves by dehumanizing them, believing they were inferior and lacking civilization. They portrayed Africans as exotic, savage, and uncivilized people who needed to be civilized through slavery. This allowed Europeans to exploit Africans for labor and economic gain without guilt.

Europeans used Social Darwinism to justify their imperialistic expansion by believing that they were more "fit" and advanced than other cultures. This idea was used to legitimize their colonization and exploitation of other peoples, claiming it was their right as the superior race to rule over others. Social Darwinism also helped Europeans rationalize the concept of "survival of the fittest" in the context of international competition and conflict.
The europeans used Social Darwinism to justify their increase in emprie building with the justification that all creatures have and will still continue to evolve, and as such, there needed to be new accomodations met.
Europeans believed they should conquer other lands to help those places become industrialized.
