The first thing George Washington did was to make sure the United States was an independent country, one that was in no way beholden to England. He supported the newly written Constitution and the Bill of Rights; and he made certain that the public did not perceive him as a king-- in fact, although he could probably have served as many terms as he wished, he restricted himself to two terms as president. He also showed a willingness to welcome religious minorities-- he was tolerant of Jews and even visited a synagogue, where he spoke about the importance of religious freedom and stated that America was a country where people were free to practice whatever faith they wished. Both President Washington and his wife Martha were very popular, and by most historical accounts, the public had great confidence in the president's ability to lead the new nation.
