∙ 13y agoKings had a lot to be afraid of. They could be overthrown by their own children, or even, as in the case of the English King Edward II, their wives. They could be overthrown by their stewards, the nobility, or neighboring kings. They could be excommunicated, which they probably would not have minded so much except that it gave anyone who wanted to overthrow them a papal license to do so. Some were afraid of God or Satan. Some were afraid of disease. Others were afraid of going broke. A few were afraid of their mothers in law, I suppose.
