The tried to escape from the Tuileries palace toMontmédy on the 21st of June 1791. They never reached Montmédy though, as they were caught in Varennes and brought back to Paris.
He didn't react violent at all. As a matter of fact he reacted very apathically. The third estate wanted to overtrow the monarchy (thus, Louis XVI as their king), and since he was an execellent king, he was also a weak one. He did not resist. The only thing he did do, was try to flee the country, but he was captured.
In 1789, to avert the deepening crisis, Louis agreed to summon the Estates-General (a form of parliament, but without real power) in order to try and raise taxes. This was the first time the body had met since 1614. Angered by Louis' refusal to allow the three Estates - the First (clergy), Second (nobles) and Third (commons) - to meet simultaneously, the Third Estate proclaimed itself a National Assembly, declaring that only they had the right to represent the nation. Rumours that the king intended to suppress the assembly provoked the storming of the Bastille prison, a symbol of repressive royal power, on 14 July 1789.
He knew that if he wouldn't, the monarchy would die for sure and he and his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, would be dethroned. He wanted to try to get across the border in order to rescue the monarchy from dying so the throne would be saved. He also knew that if he wouldn't succeed, the monarchy would be slaughtered after all. He decided to take the risk after Marie Antoinette had begged him to do so.
They were put under house arrest in the Tuillerie palace and guarded 24 hours a day, so actually they were prisoners at the time. They saw how the monarchy was dying and feared for their lives. They were insulted every day. They wanted to go abroad to try to get help from foreign countries to try to fix the monarchial system.So that he and his family would live.
He tried to escape to austria, but the people stopped his carriage before he had past the border.
It had become apparent that their lives were in danger if they remained in France.
