There were many ways Europe controlled African territories. There were:Dominions. They were able to partially control their internal and external affairs, but were still subject to partial European control.Self-Governing colonies. Nearly totally self-governing, with Europe still controlling much of their external affairs.Colonies with Representative councils. They had legislative chambers, but didn't totally control their internal or external affairs.Colonies ruled directly by a governor. They had little/no autonomy over themselves. Governors controlled almost all affairs.Protectorates. A self-governing territory that is ruled externally by a European power to protect them from stronger/larger nations. The presence of French, Portuguese, Spanish, or English as official languages, the influence of European architecture, and the legacy of European colonization in the form of trade patterns, governmental structures, and cultural practices are indicators that these nations were once controlled by European countries.
