The search for the sources of the Nile river was a driving force for many early explorers. Consequently, it was the south-eastern part of inner Africa that was first explored by Europeans, between 1850 and 1860.
Although many people (including many Africans themselves) have the idea that Western nations have been exploiting all of Africa's riches for centuries, truth is that until 1860 European countries held no more than a number of trading posts along the coast, and by 1870, no more than 10% of Africa - mostly in the north - was colonized. Given that by 1960 decolonization was fully under way, the colonization period has lasted no more than about 80 years of Africa's history.
The first "inner African" territory to be colonized was the Congo, around 1880. This was by the way not a colony of a European nation, but the private posession of king Léopold II of Belgium.
