Stalin, the corrupt ruler of the USSR purged his own country by having the KGB (Soviet Secret Police) purge anybody who was even the slightest bit suspicious of treason, even if they weren't and even if he didn't have a reason. He would send them to gulags in Siberia (gulags were the harsh prison camps that the Soviet Union used) tortured them until they gave the information they wanted (even if it was false) or simply killed them. Stalin even prosecuted many of his and the armys superior officers. Millions died, and everybody was very paranoid and scared about it. That is why.
The Great Purge was orchestrated by Joseph Stalin and took place from 1934 to 1940. During this time, Stalin removed thousands of people from the communist party in an effort to solidify his position. Being expelled from the party during this period often meant that you would also be arrested, imprisoned, and sometimes executed.
