Why wont your guinea pig eat fresh fruits and veggies?

Because this is not (and should not be) part of their natural diet. Guinea pigs benefit from feeding on fresh grass hay, such as timothy hay, in addition to food pellets which are often based from timothy. Alfalfa is also a popular food choice; most guinea pigs will eat large amounts of alfalfa when offered it, though there exists some controversy over the feeding of alfalfa to adult guinea pigs. Some pet owners and veterinary organizations have advised that, as a legume rather than a grass hay, alfalfa consumed in large amounts may lead to obesity, as well as bladder stones due to excess calcium, in any but pregnant and very young guinea pigs. However, published scientific sources mention alfalfa as a source for replenishment of protein, amino acids and fiber. For the source and more detailed information concerning this subject, click on the related links section indicated below.

Do guinea pigs eat vegetables cooked frozen or thawed?

No, guinea pigs must not eat frozen vegetables. Guinea pigs must not eat cooked vegetables either. They can only have fresh green vegetable or else their stomachs can get upset. In addition to vegetables, guinea pigs require constant access to a specific type of hay called timothy. Timothy provides nutrients that are important to a piggy's diet as well as the rough texture needed to keep their teeth in good condition. Be careful when buying commercially-prepared foods; some less-expensive brands dilute timothy with alfalfa but the latter isn't nutritionally suitable.

What can you feed a guinea pig?

If they are still with the mother, she will wean them at 3-5 weeks. Provide regular guinea pig food (grass hay, alfalfa pellets, and fresh vegetables) and they will eat it when they are ready. If a baby doesn't eat any regular food within a week, loses weight, or doesn't gain weight, take him to the vet, as he may have a tooth problem, especially if he is all white. Baby guinea pigs also need alfalfa hay to chew on. Once they become adults, however, they should be fed only timothy or another grass hay, such as bluegrass or orchard grass. Alfalfa hay may contribute to bladder stones in adults, which is an ailment to be avoided at all costs. Most pellet-type foods found in pet stores are made of alfalfa hay, and poor quality anyway. Oxbow Hay makes the best pellets (Cavy Performance, which is alfalfa-based, and Cavy Cuisine, which is timothy-based) and a variety of good hays. KM's Hayloft sells timothy, bluegrass, and alfalfa hays. The mother will feed the pups and wean them on her own. Always have fresh veggies, high quality pellets, and Timothy hay available to them so they can start to nibble on food when they are ready to. They can eat pelleted foods almost immediatley from birth but they will Prefer mothers milk the first few weeks. When feeding Pellets NEVER BUY FOOD THAT SAYS IT IS FOR RABBITS ALSO. This food can harm a piggy due to vitamins/antibiotics the companies place in the food when they make it. These are TOXIC (poisonous) to a small baby Guinea Pig. A baby guinea pig is much like any other baby animal, until it is a certain age it will only drink milk from its mother but after about 4 weeks tthey should be able to nibbble soome carrot or apple

How much fat do pregnant guinea pigs need?

They don't necessarily need more fat, but more nutirition from a good quality pellets like Oxbow's Cavy Cuisine (or even their cavy performance food that is alfalfa based so it has more calcium for the pups' growing bones, though alfalfa based foods aren't good for guinea pigs over 6 months anyways), unlimited ammounts of hay, lots of fresh greens like romaine lettuce/swiss chard/kale/spinach/ect..., and fresh clean water.
