Elephants are still used in Asia and Africa for various purposes, such as in forestry, lifting and stacking heavy logs and for pulling heavy weights. This use has gone down with the invention of heavy machines to do the job, of course. In tourism elephants are useful for elephant tours where tourists can experience an elephant ride, for example in India and Thailand. They are also used in zoos and kept in preservations. Elephants are expensive animals to buy and too feed. One needs special knowledge to handle them, a person called the 'mahout' or elephant driver.

Did the humams introduce the African elephant?

In ancient times, elephants were brought to many places from the wilds of Africa. Some were used for warfare. Hannibal, the famous general of Carthage used elephants much like today's tanks. Elephants also proved they could survive harsh temperatures. Hannibal had them cross the Alps with his army as he then marched into Italy. This was the Second Punic War.
