Sulcata Tortoises are not rare. Because of their size you're not likely to find them in a pet store. Because of their "wow" factor people get them and when they figure out how big they get and how much care they need, they send them off to a rescue group. There's a shelter for them in Arizona that is overflowing. Amazing creatures but not for the average Joe.
