fleas sort of look like head lice. they are black and small, and extremly fast and hard to catch, when you do catch them you have to squize them between your nails so they break in half other wise they dont die! they also leave dirt on your dog and cat

Are tapeworms contagious to other cats?

Cats or dogs or any other mammals cannot pass on the tapeworms directly to the other cat, dog, etc. It has to be passed on by a Flea. The flea is called the intermediate host. The eggs are passed out in the stool of an infected animal in little segments that look like grains of rice. If the animal ate that directly, he would still not become infected. The eggs have to be ingested by the flea who then passes it on when he lands on a dog or cat and bites them. Then the cat or dog can become infected from the flea. So that is one reason for flea protection. Use Frontline monthly or some other product that does the same thing on your cat or dog.

How do you know if your dog has fles?

Sometimes you don't know as the flea actually spends very little of its life cycle on the dog. Sometimes they just jump on and bite the animal, then off. Various ways you can tell is to rub the hair the opposite way it lies and look for flea poop, little black specks. Look around the base of the tail and on the belly. You can also use a special flea comb to comb through the hair. The best thing to do is to prevent flea infestations. Use a once a month flea preventative such as Frontline, Advantix, etc. to put on their skin. You need to keep the fleas off of your dog as they can cause skin problems, hot spots, tapeworm infestations, as the flea can carry the tapeworm eggs which then can be passed on to the dog when he bites at the flea and accidentally ingests the flea. Now your animal has tapeworms too. So keep the fleas off of your dog by just assuming he has fleas and use a preventative for fleas on your dog.

What do fleas look like on dogs?

They are tiny black or deep brown and yes, they do bite the dog. They also can get into things in the house. Some people are allergic to flea bites. If the dogs don't go to the vet and get a flea remedy such as "Program" (the vets have other types) then the dog will be miserable. Fleas are usually all over a dog, but particularly love the nose area and behind the ears.
