A simple answer is the harness and traces.
A harness is placed on both horses. The horse (or horses) is attached to the vehicle by the traces. An attendant (formally called a "footman") is there to assist the carriage driver in handling the horses from the ground. Carriage drivers should never leave the seat until all passengers are safely out of the carriage, so in an emergency (horses acting up, broken harness parts, etc.), the footman is there to head the horses or otherwise assist in correcting what is wrong. Outriders are riders on horseback that were traditionally used as scouts, riding ahead of the carriage or wagon to check on road conditions, etc.
