Why is my German short hair pointer suddenly afraid of gun fire wont hunt dog is 10yrs old in great shape I didn't take him hunting last year because there was a big fire where usually hunt?

This is hopefully a far fetch, but somebody may have shot him or at him. Especially if you live in a rural area and the dog roams around. Our dog was hit by some buckshot last year.
Another possibility is he might be losing his hearing. This may sound counterintuitive, but if he can hear subtle noises like talking, a sudden loud noise like gun fire or thunder may surprise him. This might be it since he is fairly old.
Try going target practicing with him. Get him used to the sound again.
