I have seen this on several Catera's. The wire going to the starter and alternator gets about 170 degrees. The main started cable wire goes around in the front of the engine in a plastic condiut and then goes down the right side of the engine and goes very close to the exhaust header and then splits off to the alternator and than to the starter. It is the heat from the engine and exhaust that causes it to get so hot. I tried this on my Catera. I ran another cable the same size as the OEM cable, and ran it straight to the rear firewall and ran it over to the right side firewall, using a condiut making sure it would not short out on any metal, and then down to the starter and then to the alternator. I cut the other cable that was the original OEM, and when I did that the cable I installed never got hot again. I have never read anybody doing this but it worked for me.
Check the battery cables or starter.
Voltage Regulator?
Try the cables from your battery and alt. Sometimes these can corrode.
Make sure the Negative cable is well grounded. That may be the problem.
Loose alternator drive belt or loose or corroded battery cables. The battery itself may also be bad.
Well, It could be your battery or alternator or both needs to be replaced but it could just be loose or corroded battery cables
You probably have a bad ground. Check the grounds on the brake lights.
the alternator
1. Disconnect battery cables. 2. Remove and replace alternator. 3. Reconnect battery cables. The alternator should be held in place by a couple of bolts. what about the belt tension
The PLIP battery on the Peugeot 307 means that the battery is in need of charging. It can also mean there is a problem with the battery cables or the battery needs to be replaced. Not replacing the battery when necessary can also cause problems for the alternator.
You'll need an external power source (such as a battery charger or another car hooked to battery cables) in order to start your vehicle. A battery which is truly depleted - not just discharged - will not take a charge from the alternator, and will need to be replaced.
batteries are stored energy, nothing should have happened. They say to disconnect the negative terminal for safety reasons.
