The people in ancient Rome enjoyed plenty of Natural Resources. They had plenty of fresh water, protection from invaders by land or sea, rich soil in which to plant crops, and plenty of sea access to facilitate trade and to engage in trade.
Rome had a good local water supply and when demand exceeded supply the Romans brought water from the nearby Apennines Mountains with aqueducts. The hills of Rome had tuff, a volcanic rock which was good material for construction. The Romans also brought in peperino and travertine stone for construction from elsewhere in the region. The land around Rome was of average agricultural fertility. Corn, grapes and olives were important products. There was also pastoral land for sheep grazing. Roman clothes were made of sheep wool.
The most important agricultural goods in the Roman Empire were corn (the stable diet) olive oil and grapes and wine. There were other types of fruit and vegetables.
Gold, silver, iron, led, copper and tin were mining products. Tuff, peperino, travertine, marble, porphyry, alabaster and granite were the main quarried stones.
Timber, glass and wool were also important resources. Cotton and liner were affordable only for the rich.
Ivory, ebony and exotic animals (elephants, rhinos, giraffes and ostriches) were imported from Africa though Egypt. Incense was imported for Arabia, Spices were imported form India and silk was imported from China.
