Scarecrows are for scaring predators away from farm crops and garden edibles. They're supposed to give the impression of 24-7 monitoring of a cultivated area. Additionally, they add an attractively traditional look to an environmentally friendly way of protecting plants without resorting to sprays and traps.

On some farms you may see a scarecrow and ask, "how is that meant to help?" The scarecrow's job is in its name, to scare crows. The famer has a scarecrow because the scarecrow looks like a human, and crows don't really like humans. Crows feast on farmers crops, this is why the scarecrow was invented.

Scarecrows can be part of Halloween. They are used for the season fall or fields usually though so don't make them decorations for Halloween. For a costume, however, go ahead.
