Prolactin levels have a great deal to do with milk production and release as does oxytocin (another hormone). Since prolactin is sometimes a component of Birth Control pills it is possible that milk leakage is the result of oral contraception. The other factor, oxytocin, promotes the emptying of breast and is released with physical stimulation of the breasts, either by the baby but not necessarily so.
Always a good idea to consult your OB/G.

∙ 16y agoI wondered this as well but haven't been able to find an answer. I have this problem 4 months after giving birth. Assume it's hormonal and have been told hormones can take a while to return to normal and the length of time varies for each person.

This can be done by massaging the breast down to the nipple and then compressing the areola, with your fingers at least a couple of centimetres behind the actual nipple. Ladies can only wish (if they are as small as me) that their breasts will be permanently big. If you don't breastfeed they will go back to their original size. And if you do breastfeed they will go back to their original size once you have stopped breastfeeding. The enlargement during pregnancy and after birth has nothing to do with the fatty tissues but fluid in the glandular tissues.
