Can you use the tv as the center channel?

If you're talking about getting true surround sound, then generally no. Some flat screens come with speakers that are connected to the tv with speaker wire specifically so you can disconnect it from the TV and plug it into your surround receiver, but other than that....no. The problem is that in surround sound you have 5 (or more) speakers each getting a specific part of the audio to play. Stuff happening on the right rear of the soundstage in the movie comes out of the right rear speaker etc. The television speaker has no such capability so when you turn it on it's going to play all the sound in stereo. It can be done but it won't sound right.

Learn The Facts About Surround Sound?

Anybody who has ever seen a movie in a modern quality movie theater has experienced surround sound. Surround sound gives the movie viewer an enhanced experience allowing him or her to hear the sounds as if he or she were in the middle of the movie. Today, movie viewers can bring that same experience into their homes with a quality surround sound system as part of their home theater.Currently, there are three types of audio formats that allow for surround sound. These formats are 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1. The format numbers signify how many surround sound speakers or channels are used and how many subwoofers. For example, a 5.1 surround audio format will use five surround sound speakers or channels and one subwoofer. For an enhanced surround sound experience, the 7.1 format is recommended.Once the preferred audio format is chosen, it is time to consider the equipment necessary to achieve surround sound. Typically, one can find surround sound sets which include the receiver, subwoofer, and the surround sound speakers. Kits also come in two options, wired and wireless. The wireless option is highly recommended because the speakers have to be placed in precise locations to achieve surround sound and therefore will eliminate having to use wires. Now that the correct equipment has been purchased, it is then time to set up the surround sound speakers. The position of the speakers is of great importance to give viewers the ultimate surround sound experience. Location of the speakers will depend greatly on the audio format chosen. The owner's manual will offer suggestions for the placement of each of the speakers or information can easily be found on the Internet.Adding a surround sound system to one's home theater will change the way viewers experience movies. With a quality surround sound system, home theaters can have the same movie experience that is offered in a large movie theater. Surround sound systems are fairly easy to set up, especially when using the wireless speaker option. Surround sound systems can be purchased online or at a local electronics store.

I connected my thinkpad laptop to my TV using an HDMI cable but I can't get the sound to come through my surround sound speakers - If I can't do that at least tell me how to use my TV speakers?

make sure your are connecting the 3.5 mm M2M or M2A cable in the input. If that doesn't work then 1 of 2 things. 1.)you might need to buy new cables or 2.) the audio terminal is out in your home theater and you need to send it back if still in warranty or replace it. AND the answer to the second part..you cannot do that.

What kind of audio cable do you need for your high definition television?

If you would like to hook your high definition television to your sound system, most of the time you don't need any different cables than a regular tv hook up. Most sound systems come with cables that are compatible with the more popular current HD tv.

How do you plug in a home theater system to a tv with no audio input jacks?

I understand your reasoning, but you are on the wrong track to say the least. You do not want to plug audio from HT system into a TV. You want to plug all audio sources into the HT system and turn the speakers on the TV off. Your HT speakers will replace your TV speakers - its the whole point of having HT. All that being said if your TV/ HT system has HDMI then audio will go across that line. TV speakers are pretty weak, on new flat panels they are even worse due to their small size and awkward positioning. A basic HT system is a 3.1 system meaning a center channel speaker to deliver dialogue and two stereo speakers, the .1 indicates the presence of a subwoofer for base. A 5.1 system add two rear speakers for surround sound and 7.1 adds two more. 5.1 is a pretty reasonable route to go. An even more simple solution would be a soundbar with a subwoofer (sound bars have small speakers and need a sub to complete the range of sound and you do not need a HT receiver. The first thing you need to do is look at your HT receiver manual and figure out your setup. There can be quite a few variables that can come into play.

How do I connect my PC to my TV using DVI and Optical?

DETAILS ON MY ISSUE This is how my setup is currently. PC>>Audio Sound Bar with multiple inputs/outputs>>TV My PC only has a DVI out for video and Optical for audio. I got an DVI to HDMI cable and I plugged it into my sound bar and I also got an optical cable going to my soundbar. Now when I select the correct input (its set to DVD) I can only get video. Its like the soundbar will only allow the audio or the video to come through. I have unplugged the hdmi and the audio comes in fine. I have also tried to put the audio on one input and the HDMI on another but obviously that doesn't solve my issue either because you cant pick more than one input.

What year did sound come in to television?

The broadcast of sound preceded the broadcast of television, therefore the first public television broadcast came with sound (not like the first films which were indeed silent).
