Tell me more about the Relief Society in the Church Of Jesus Christ.?

The Relief Society is the women's organization in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every adult woman (18 years or older) is a member of the Relief Society. Each congregation of the Church has a chapter of the Relief Society which meets every Sunday for a scripture study/worship service and one weekday a month for a service project or activity. Activities are geared toward celebrating womanhood, improving the individual, improving home and family, or improving the community. Once a year, there is a Relief Society General Meeting, in which all 5.5 million Relief Society sisters worldwide meet via sattelite to listen to speakers broadcasting from Salt Lake City. All of these activities and meetings are open to all women, regardless of their faith. The Relief Society motto is "Charity Never Faileth" and their goals are to "Increase Faith, Strengthen Families and Homes, and Serve the Lord and His Children." The Relief Society began on March 17, 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois. Here, Joseph Smith met with a group of 20 women and helped them organize the "Ladies Relief Society of Nauvoo." He taught that they were organized "for the relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow and the orphan; and not only to relieve the poor, but to save souls." It has grown and expanded over the years, and is now the only auxilliary organization of the Church to have it's own administration building at Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City. Aside from weekly Sunday and monthly weekday meetings, the Relief Society participates in many other activities. When someone in the congregation is sick or in another difficult situation, the Relief Society brings the family meals and cares for the children. Each Relief Society sister is assigned another sister to 'Visit Teach'. They contact their assigned sister at least once a month to spend time attending to their needs and give them a short spiritual thought or lesson. The Relief Society is also in charge of assisting with any funeral or wedding that may take place in the congregation - most Latter-day Saint funerals will feature a meal made by the Relief Society sisters! The Relief Society headquarters are at Temple Square in Salt Lake City Utah. The Worldwide Relief Society is headed by a President, her two counselors, and a General Board. This pattern is followed in each stake (a geographical group of several congregations) and congregation, where there is a Relief Society President, two counselors, and secretary. Other women serve as teachers, compassionate service directors, meeting coordinators, music chairpersons, etc. You can learn more about the Relief Society by visiting their website at the "Related Links" below.
