Yes you can and they will work fine, the tone will be affected. The steel strings for an Electric Guitar (steel so they interact with the magnets on the pickup) will not sound as full and rich as the bronze strings designed for acoustic. In a pinch, they will work just fine! (but not visa-versa because of the magnet thing).

It wouldn't be advisable to be honest.

Bass Guitars have a low sound and if you were to put electric Strings on, the tension wouldn't be match, and the octave wouldn't be matched.

Source: I have friends who decided to do this

I'd think pitch would be the least of your problems. Electric-guitar strings are so much thinner than bass strings that more likely than not, they won't fit a Bass Guitar. The strings would wiggle like mad at the bridge and nut. I'm not even certain they'd be long enough to reach.

If you want an easier-playing bass, try a short-scale bass (eg. Gibson's SG bass, Danelectros, or the Hofner violin bass). Or a baritone guitar.

Of course you can.

But this will be useless.

Unless you want to produce some special sound.

But to have a bass guitar sound as it usually sounds, special strings for bass guitars must be put on. They are longer and thicker.

Technically you can, but it won't work well, and here's why:

There are three factors that determine what pitch an open string sounds: neck length, string thickness, and string tension. Guitar necks and bass necks are different lengths. Guitar is usually 24-25 inches, and bass is usually 34 inches. You'll notice on a guitar or bass, the strings lower in pitch are thicker. The thicker the string, the lower it will sound. Bass strings are all thicker than guitar strings. But you'll also notice that all strings on either instrument have about the same tension. If the tension is too much, then the strings will be too tight to play and will eventually snap, and if the tension is too low, the strings will be too loose and flabby to sound any good.

If you were to put bass strings on an electric guitar, you would have to match the natural playable tension of the string while dealing with a guitar's 10 inch shorter neck. To make it playable, you would have to tune the strings around a forth higher. Meaning, tune an E string to an A, an A string to a D, a D string to a G and a G string to a C. But you still deal with the fact that the strings are extremely thick, and won't fit in the notches in your nut, making it difficult to play on the first and second frets.

HOWEVER: Adding bass strings to a guitar has been done successfully. The Chapman Stick is an instrument famous for possessing strings from both guitar and bass. Check it out.

If you want to then you can teach yourself on an acoustic guitar using the E,A,D,G strings, but its worth remembering that on an actual bass the notes are an octave lower, the guitar is longer, the fretboard is wider, the strings a heavier gauge and spaced further apart than a regular guitar.

Sure - use the first four strings, and they'll sound one octave high.

technically yes, as they are the same length, thickness etc. However, in order to achieve the best tone i would highly recommend getting specified acoustic strings.

There are strings called Boomers. Like the left4dead Zombies. They are made for really low tuning. If you put those on a regular guitar, it should sound like a bass.

Elctric guitar strings are put to an acoustic guitar?

It is not recommended since they are of different gauges and are made of different material.

Can you use acoustic guitar strings for acoustic electric?

using acoustic strings on an electric does not damage the guitar. tightening them too tight does. acoustic strings tend to be thicker than electric strings, so all you have to do is just tune lower to avoid putting too much stress on the neck. i just want to know why they use different materials to make them. ============ Answer No the strings are completely different. It would be much harder to play an electric even if for some reason you did put them on. And you definitely don't want to mix the two! ================ I'd be inclined to think that stringing thicker, shorter acoustic strings on an electric guitar would actually damage the electric guitar. It wasn't built to withstand that kind of string tension. The reverse can be done -- using electric strings on an acoustic guitar -- but you won't get a great deal of tone or attack. Great for a very easy-playing acoustic guitar for songwriting and low-volume playing, though.

Can you tune an electric guitar to sound like a bass?

Yes but the strings would be like elastic bands and would be muddy to to the point of being almost unplayable. Yes because the 4 strings on the bass are an octave lower than the 3, 4, 5, and 6 strings on any guitar.

Is it possible to convert classic guitar to acoustic guitar?

Not a good idea. The classical guitar is made for nylon strings that put less tension on the bridge than the steel strings used for standard acoustic guitars. It would most likely pull the bridge off the guitar.

What is the difference between electric bass strings and acoustic bass strings?

electric guitar strings are simply made for the quality of the pick-ups if you put electric guitar strings on an acoustic guitar it will have a low quality sound and if you put acoustic guitar strings on an electric guitar you will be luck to get much sound at all.

What gauge strings should you put on your acoustic guitar?

go with regular 10-46, if you're a blues player 11-49 , metal anything thicker. You can put anything on them really the thicker the louder and you can still play standard on even 13-58 strings.

Can you put guitar strings on bass guitar l?

Although i ave never tried this myself, i would not recomend it. Firstly, basses are normally longer than standard guitars, so the strings might not fit. Secondly, it totally defeats the object of having a bass fi you're going to shove strings that would make it sound like a guitar on it.======= Even short-scale basses are usually at least 30 inches long, and regular basses are 34 inches. The grooves cut on the nut of a bass are too large for guitar strings, and bass bridges were not designed to hold down guitar strings. The string spacing of a bass is completely unsuitable for guitar-style playing. If you want a guitar with a bass feel, try a baritone guitar.

Do acoustic guitar nylon strings silvercoated work on acoustic electric?

YES IT DOES but if your guitar starts off with metal strings keep to metal strings.if you start to use nilon your guitar neck will eventuly weaken. if your guitar starts off with nilon strings NEVER EVER put metal strings on on it. your guitar neck will not be able to widstand the presure and your neck will sink there for stuffing your guitar.

Can you put gut strings on an electric bass that has a piezo pickup?

yes. piezzo pickups collect the vibration from the bridge.

Is an electric double bass better than an acoustic double bass?

For starters, a standard guitar has six strings, while a bass guitar usually has only four (there are five and even six-string models for advanced styles.) Regarding the sound and role of the instruments, the guitar is in a higher register than the bass guitar, and is more commonly used as the lead instrument in a band than the bass (there are some exceptions to this). The bass guitar, as the name suggests, is in a lower register and is most frequently part of the rhythm section of a band. Again, many genres of music do incorporate bass leads, such as funk (Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Alternative/Metal (Les Claypool of Primus) and jazz fusion (Jaco Pastorius) styles. An electric bass guitar is simply a bass with the electronic anatomy of an electric guitar. Like a six-string electric guitar, an electric bass guitar uses magnetic pickups to "pick up" the vibrations created by the strings and send the sound signal to an amplifier. Effects may also be used to alter the sound quality of the signal. Well a bass has a low sound electric has to be played with an amp and guitar acoustic can be played any where In theory a bass and a guitar both have a vital role in a band and even though the guitar is looked up to more by people do not let this put you of learning the bass, as there are way too many guitar players to bassists ratio.

Can you put acoustic strings on electric guitars?

yes , it'll give you a darker sound because that is the metal bronze characteristic. I suggest nickel or steel strings for an electric guitar to get the pickups to work properly.
