Yes, most likely. Lots of things have serial numbers, and those are often recorded in guidebooks.
Additionally, calling the manufacturer such as Singer Sewing Machines with a serial no will get you a date as well. Remington Firearms have a letter code stamped into the steel barrel in addition to the serial no. which indicates the month and year of manufacture and that decoding key was found right here at WikiAnswers!
Also, you can look on the back driverside on top of the head of you car or truck motor and there are some numbers and they will tell you what year it was made and what size. Like the Chevy 350 v8 with the number 3970010 was made from 1969 to 1979 for that style of engine.
If your looking for a year of the car/look look at the DOT number on the headlight, tail light, side/marker number. This will give you an idea what year the car/truck is. Keep in mid that auto makers used the same parts for a few years before over hauling the look.
Usually not possible. More than one gun can have the same serial number.
Record the serial number then contact the company. Using the serial number they can tell you the year it was made.
See if a book has been published on the company that made it
Not possible. There is more than one gun with the same serial number, some guns were made with NO serial numbers, and data does not exist to translate SN to make/model.
I am sure the first rifles made using black powder did not have a serial number engraved. Antique rifles without a serial number do exist. I am however unsure what the law state about collector pieces. Logically one can not force a serial number onto a piece that originally was made without one.
