Two theories that people think chimpanzees spread it to us are 1 the butchers would cut up the chimps and they would be infected with the blood or 2 the chimps would bite people

∙ 14y agoIt is hypothesized that it originated in apes, and was carried over to humans through hunters. It was not uncommon for a hunter to cut themselves with a knife or a sharp bone while dressing out the apes, leaving an avenue for blood transmission.

∙ 9y agoMonkeys don't get HIV, the H stands for Human. But monkeys and apes can carry another, closely related viral disease, which made its way into humans - most probably through the "Bush Meat trade" - and mutated into the HIV strain(s) which can strike humans.
