For most of U.S. history, from the 1810 census to the 1960 census, New York was the largest U.S. state by population. During the 1960s California's population pulled ahead of New York's, and during the 1990s Texas' population pulled ahead of New York's. On December 23, 2014, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that between July 2013 and July 2014 Florida's population pulled ahead of New York's, so New York is currently the 4th-largest U.S. state by population.
