What are the benefits of soybeans?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1. Making soy milk does less damage to the environment than raising cows to produce cows milk. It produces less greenhouse gasses, wastes less water, causes less water pollution and less land pollution. It also uses less land.

2. Producing cows milk on factory farms is very cruel to the cows. They are kept indoors in tiny enclosures, and hooked up to milking machines that cause them to have inflamed and infected udders. The cows are made pregnant frequently and then their calves are taken away from them after they give birth. They are given hormones and antibiotics to make them produce as much as 10 times the milk that they would produce naturally. Soy milk is cruelty free.

3. Cows milk contains hormones and antibiotics that may have negative health effects on humans.

4. Soy milk doesn't contain any cholesterol. This may be better for you if you have high cholesterol or other risk factors for heart disease.

5. Soy milk contains natural hormones that mimic the effects of Estrogen. This can be helpful if you are having menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes.

6. Soy milk doesn't contain lactose. It can be easier to digest if you have lactose intolerance.

7. On the other hand, most soy milk has added sugar. Get the unsweetened kind. Stir or shake it before you pour it in your glass, because the soy settles to the bottom of the container.

8. It's cheaper than cow's milk.

9. It stays fresh longer in the refrigerator.

(That's all I can think of, but it's quite a lot.)

Lack G and others. Factors associates with the development of peanut allergy in childhood. N Engl J Med 2003 Mar 13;348(11):977-85. The number of children with life-threatening peanut allergies has tripled during the last decade. This study suggests a link between consumption of soy-based formula and the development of peanut allergies. Scientists at the University of Bristol monitored 14,000 babies in the southwest of England. Among the 49 children who developed a peanut allergy, almost a quarter had consumed soy milkduring their first two years. (Less than 5 percent of babies overall receive soy formula in the UK.) According to lead researcher Gideon Lack, "These results suggest that sensitization to peanut may possibly occur. . . as a result of soya exposure."

How much is a bushel of soybean worth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A bushel of soybean (60 pounds) currently (August 2012) sells for around $16-17.

Non GMO food grade soybean (yellow hilum) sold for a $2.15 premium but yield is usually lower.

It is a very volatile market that changes from day to day, and we don't have the data on the 2012 crop yet, the U.S. drought seems to have ended so there will probably be no shortage and no spiked prices.

Prices in January 2012 were around $12 per bushel.

Is monggo a soy bean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They are both legumes but they are in completely different geni, soybean (Glycine max) is from the Glycine genus, and mung bean (Vigna radiata) from the Vigna genus, both of which are different from the traditional bean (Phaseolus genus).

The confusion came from the fact that sprouted mung beans were at times sold as "soybean" sprouts. Mung beans used for bean sprouts have a green skin, while the soybean, which is about twice bigger, is white or yellow.
