Do parrots need gravel like parakeets do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Parrots, like parakeets, don't necessarily need gravel. However, providing a substrate like sand or grit can aid in digestion by helping grind down food in their gizzards. It's essential to research specific species requirements as they vary.

Your cockatiels are breeding but not laying eggs what is wrong?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is very common and natural for female birds to lay eggs at regular intervals even when they are not in the presence if a male. Removing the nest may help in slowing down egg production, but many birds will do this. I myself had female zebra finches that laid an egg at least every two weeks, and of course they never hatched because the eggs were infertile.

What nuts can parakeets eat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your pet parakeet thrives quite nicely on a properly balanced diet of fruits, vegetables pellets and seeds. However, every so often that birdie boy of yours feels like a nut. When he does, shell out a nutty treat from this nutritious list of parakeet favorites.

The Almond

The almond is one of the most nutritionally dense nuts available. Rich in vitamin E, minerals and antioxidants, the noble almond is loaded with more protein than eggs and scores relatively low in saturated fat content. You'll need to crack the shell of this nut slightly for your feathered friend, and then stand back as your boy starts digging out the nutritious nut meat hidden inside.

The Pistachio

This nut is as fun for your bird to eat as it is for you to say. The task of removing this nutritious, delicately-flavored nut from its shell will keep your busy boy occupied for hours on end. High in antioxidants, protein, carbohydrates and fiber, and low in calories, pistachios in moderate rations will help to keep your fine feathered friend lean, healthy and happy.

The Walnut

Loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, and omega 3 fatty acids, the walnut is a healthy treat your parakeet will be wild about. This is a tough nut to crack, so shell and chop up the walnut for your bird before serving. However, bird friend beware, this tasty, high-energy seed of the walnut tree contains some crazy calories, so easy does it on the portions.

The Pecan

Another tough nut to crack, the pecan must be opened and diced before your bird can enjoy it. Naturally low in sodium, high in protein and unsaturated fats, the pecan has no cholesterol, and is a good source of nutrients, like calcium, iron and magnesium. This nutty treat also is a good source of oleic acid, a fatty acid that can help to keep your parakeet pal's skin and feathers healthy and vibrant.

I hope that helped!

Why do your budgies preen each other?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They preen each other because they have deep affection for one another, or they're just really good friends and want to help each other out by preening " that hard spot".

Budgies must preen their feathers by gathering some oil from the gland at the base of their tail and running it down each feather. They can't preen their own head and cheek feathers. Mutual preening is shared by bonded pairs as well as cage mates.

Why is your parakeet ripping out its own feathers?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well, I'm guessing the bird is either bored, is sick, or some other reason. It may be reacting to stress. Has anything major happened around the house lately? Or maybe the bird is allergic to something. Have you started feeding your bird something new? Or it could be bored. Try adding a new toy to the cage. Remember, you should have 5 toys or so on hand and rotate a toy every week or so. After not seeing the bird for about five weeks for the time it's been in rotation or whatever, the toy seems like new to the bird.
The bird may be sick, have mites or a skin irritation. But anyways, I think you should take your bird to the vet no matter what. The vet might recommend a bird behaviorist. Keep trying different things till' he/she stops. Or the bird may never stop and become a plucker for the rest of his/her life. In that case, enjoy your feather plucker and don't sell her just because she doesn't have feathers.

What are some materials that I can place outside that birds can use in building their nests?

User Avatar

Asked by JoyceP

You can help birds in building nests for laying their eggs every spring by putting out short strips of yarn, natural fiber fabrics and cotton balls torn into small pieces. It doesn't matter what color the materials are; I've seen bright blue, yellow and red pieces that I've put out for them in their nests.

Just make sure they are free of chemicals and toxins, which can be very harmful for the birds and their babies. You can use the long cotton strips that come in some medications, such as the ones that are capsules or enteric coated. Otherwise, the residue of some of these medications can be toxic to the the birds. Just be sure to tear the cotton into small pieces so that it's easy for the birds to carry in their beaks and work with.

You can also put out dryer lint, torn into workable pieces, as well as clumps of dog hair. Also, leave small twigs and leaves on your lawn for them to use, since these are the 'foundation' of the nest.

You need to start putting these materials out in very early spring, or even sooner, since some birds begin building their nests early and lay at least two clutches of eggs each spring/summer.

What materials do you need so your parakeet can lay eggs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Loads. But most are inexpensive. For starters, a cage. If there's only one parakeet, then a fairly small one. Some perches toward the top for (s)he to play on, maybe a swing, toys, etc. dry seeds you can buy at a pet store, and get a water bottle, leave it out for a night, and use THAT water to feed your keet. Make sure you put the seeds and water in open bowls that you buy, not closed. Rather than eat out of not open bowls, like dispensers or something, keets have been know to starve themselves. There are other, some optional, nutritious things you may add, that you should ask someone at a petstore at.

Why would a mother parakeet kill another grown female parakeet that shes been caged with for years?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Okay so you said a "mother" parakeet, well if you don't know when it comes to animals and their children you don't mess around with them. The parents are very protective of their children. Maybe that other bird went near the other birds babies and the mother got mad. Or maybe they got into a fight. But she's been caged with her for years? Hmm this is puzzling. Well im like really sure about the whole baby reason. Wait by any chance did you have a male bird??? If so maybe they were fighting over that mate? Or over extra space in the cage??? Sorry for your loss Sincerely. echub The only recorded instances of parakeets fighting is in captivity. It is very rare, and always it is among females. There are two reasons they fight. They would fight over a mate, or fight over nest space. Fighting over nest space is the most common, but is still rare. You need twice as many identical nests as you have female parakeets. That means if you have two parakeets you need 4 identical nests. You can remove the extra nests only after each female parakeet has chosen her own nest, and really you should leave an extra nest or all the extra nests as a precaution. Also you cannot house two female parakeets and one male. That doesn't work. You need to house a male and a female, or two males, or even three males and one female. If you need to house two females together, you must make sure there are more males than females. That means if there are two females you need three males. =End New Answer= A mother parakeet would do that because she would probably want to protect her babies. Try buying a male. The mother budgie shouldn't kill this one. Hope this helps you.

Is it normal for a female budgie to eat the sandpaper at the bottom of her cage?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most seed eating birds require grit of some form in their diet. It is used in their gizzard to grind against the seeds to break them down. If no other grit is available to your bird she is using the sand from the sand paper for the same purpose. Female birds alo need a source of Calcium in order to make shells for their eggs. Cuttlefish bone is commonly hung up in the cage for this purpose.
