What is the culture difference between the Anasazi and the Mississippians?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

One major cultural difference between the Anasazi and the Mississippians was their geographic location. The Anasazi lived in the arid southwestern United States, while the Mississippians lived in the eastern woodlands. Another difference was their architectural styles – the Anasazi built cliff dwellings and pueblos, while the Mississippians constructed large earthen mounds and palisade walls. Additionally, their subsistence patterns differed, with the Anasazi relying more on agriculture and the Mississippians engaging in a combination of farming, hunting, and gathering.

How did the anasazi store food?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They built granarys. You can still see them in canyon country to this day. The ones that survive are usually under overhung cliffs and bricked up with stone and mud. They have small doors that were blocked up to keep out the rodents. You can still see corn cobs in some of them today. They are usually about the size of a big closet or small walk-in closet. There were others that were in the open but they have not survived the weather.

Did the Anasazi have enemies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

During the Pueblo III period ( 1100-1300 A.D. ) the Anasazi began to build the cliff dwellings for which they are most famous. Many buildings in these villages under the cliffs were several stories tall. These villages were in places that were easily defensible, suggesting that they had maybe acquired enemies that they did not have in earlier periods, although the reasons for these types of buildings are not really known.

What are facts about the Anasazi?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Alright, the Anasazi.

I know they disappeared from Chaco Canyon in New Mexico a long time ago. There are many theories on how they disappeared. They also created the city of Pueblo Bonito, which is still there today. There was once a tree in Pueblo Bonito, a Pinerosa tree, which grows in the mountains. They must have spent a lot of time caring for it for religious purposes. Once it died, they must have left because they didn't think it was sacred anymore. Another reason is that they didn't feel that Chaco Canyon was the place for them to be, so they left and at every destination, they would yell "Haaku!". One day, they got an echo. So, they found that place ans settled there. They could have died by lack of water(?). They could have been forced away by their enemies. The Hopi, Acoma, and Zuni tribes claim to be their descendants. The "Haaku" theory had to do where the Acoma People live now.

In the Alcheaic Period(sorry if I spelled that wrong), they hunted the deer and turkey almost to exctinction, so they had to live off of corn, beans ,and squash. Because of this diet, their children became shorter and shorter. Sometimes they would find a deer, and eat it. They had these tools called "Mano Metates" which are little stone grinders that they use to grind their corn. Since it was made of sandstone, the grit mixed in with the grinded-up corn so the would eat that and possibly, their teeth would fall out!!

They also had little religious places underground or partially under that called kivas. In the Basket-maker Period, they lived in Pit Houses and before that they lived in caves. Kivas are like churchs to us and the anasazi had special indentions in them like sipapus, which the Hopi and Acoma tribes believe that their ancestors came out of the earth through a sipapu. They would have to carry circuar discs in the kiva that were VERY, VERY heavy. Sometimes they would drop these and the rock would cut of their fingers. So they could be toothless and fingerless. *shrugs* When they would beat against their foot-drums, and since the kiva is under ground with the only entrance was a ladder coming down from the roof, the sound would bounce against the walls and go right back into their ears. OUCH! So they possibly could be deaf. *shrugs*

Hopefully you enjoyed that! If you visit Chaco Canyon, you can go see some petroglyphs they went behind! ;)

What roles or jobs were assigned to the women and men in the Anasazi tribe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

We are the mothers, the daughters, the grandmothers and sisters. We "own" the home, the children, and the final say. We are looked at as equals to men and have always had equal rights in our societies.

It is the clan mothers who listen to their clans and bring their clan's wishes together with the other clan mothers who discushiand bring the decision to the chiefs to be enacted upon. If the chiefs do not like our decision they may bring it back to the clan mothers to be discussed but it is the clan mothers who have the final say and if they do not change their minds then it is up to the chiefs to carry out their wishes. This might seem like a matriarchal society but is'NT entirely so as it is the men still stand before us as representatives of our nations and our protectors.

We are a matrilineal society and our clan and citizenships are through the mothers' lines not the fathers. This means if your mother is of the deer clan of the onondaga and your father is a bear clan of the seneca, you as their child would be a deer of the onondaga.

As far as what you may be asking what about our "traditional" roles might be then we took care of the home, and cooked and raised the children. But when men were'NT hunting or at war they were also helping raise crops in the field and tending to their children.

Who were the Anasazi and Hopi?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Anasazi are people who lived in the high plateau four corners area for 800 years until 1300. In the 1200s they started moving south and east and consolidating in the locations of the Modern Pueblo peoples. Some of them moved to the Hopi mesas. The Hopi were at their location as early at 1000 AD. They share in the same culture. They trace many of their clans and rituals to different Anasazi locations. The Hopis and Pueblo people are the Anasazi's direct descendants. Today there are about 18,000 Hopi members of the Hpoi Nation mostly on the three mesas on the southern edge of Black mesa were they have always lived, to the northeast of Flagstaff. About 75% speak Hopi. Many still farm corn and participate in complex rituals. Attached is the Hopi Nation website.

What Indian tribes lived in Maine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There were only five Native American tribes living in what later became Maine during the 1700s. The Abanaki were in southern Maine (Portland, Windham, Wesbrook and parts of New Hampshire. The Penobscot were in middle Maine and the Passamaquoddy were in the ocean regions near Canada and Maine. The Maliseets were near the Micmac in very northern Maine (Flagstaff, Maine to Caribou, Maine).

Some scientists think that Native Americans migrated from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is either Europe Aisa or Spain.

Edit:

Decades ago, it was believed and taught in schools that the aboriginal tribes came over the frozen Bering Strait between Russia and the United States. Later in the twentieth century, some scientists believed there was a coastal sea route from South America through North America which lead to the belief the Indians might be decendants of southern peoples. Still others have surmised that Indian tribes came over from Mongolia and Africa. Late in the twentieth century, pottery shards were found in the southwest United States that have been carbon dated to be 25,000 years old. Since the Ice age is about 18,000 year old only, it negates the Bering Strait theory.

In truth, no one really knows from where they emigrated or IF they emigrated. Most tribes have stories where their Peoples have been on this continent since memory. Meaning they have always been here.
