Where does the word Germany come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The English name Germany comes from the Latin Germania. Julius Caesar adopted it from a Gallic term for the peoples west of the Rhine river, it's likely that it meant "neighbor".

The Germans refer to their country as Deutschland, which is derived from the Old High German diutisc, or similar variants from Proto-Germanic *Þeudiskaz, which originally meant "of the people". This in turn comes from a Germanic word meaning "folk" (leading to Old High German diot, Middle High German diet), and was used to differentiate between the speakers of Germanic languages and those who spoke Celtic or Romance languages. These words come from *teuta, the Proto-Indo-European word for "people" (Lithuanian tauto, Old Irish tuath, Old English þeod).

The Italian word for the Germans was tedesco or Tedeschi (variants: todesco, tudesco, todisco) and comes from the same Old High German root, although not the name for "Germany" (Germania). The British soldiers fighting in Italy in WW2 shortened this to Teds.

When is a German shepherd considered an adult?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A German Shepherd is considered an adult when they're 1 year old. They normally don't mature til they're about 3 years old. I'm an expert on German Shepherds. I've loved them since I was 8 years old. I don't own one, but I will next summer. They are high maintenence dogs. They have high standards. You need to be able to know how to take care of these dogs. They need a soft hand when they're handeled. Never hit, slap, kick, or yell. You never, ever under any circumstances leave a German Shepherd in a hot car. If you do, that dog will die in less than 10 seconds. I'm not kidding. Its true. If your not capable of taking care of these dogs, then the German Shepherd is NOT the right dog for you.

Why is the German Sheperd has a slant back and some don't?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

GSDs that don't have slanted backs are not purebred. A purebred GSD will have a slanted back (about 10 to 15 degrees from horizontal) and a little "question mark" curve at the end of its tail (amongst other things ofcourse)

How do German shepherds have babies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A "normal" gestational period for dogs and cats is 62-63 days. I would say around that time. If you haven't been tracking it. Well then you would have to watch out for her lying down, making a "nest" and watch out for her not acting as she usually does. :)

Are long-haired German Shepherds harder to take care of than short-haired German Shepherds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

  • Yes, I do believe they are as I have a short hair. I think that long haired German shepherds are harder to brush and clean because of their long hair.
  • I own a Long Hair German Shepherd, and we do not have to brush her once a day. They seem like they would get muddy and matted, but actually, I have a retriever, and she get's much more mats than my shepherd. We take them to the groomers for a bath with soap and brushing once every couple months, and in between we don't have to brush her.

Are German Shepherds good apartment dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

German shepards need lots of exercise, if you were to have one in an apartment you would need to give it a ton of exercise and outdoor time, it would be a huge commitment if you werent willing to walk that dog two to three times a day for long intervals it really wouldn't be fair. German shepards are also very intellegent and need stimulation you would need to give it lots of entertaining toys and puzzle games. If you have to, you could but a smaller, less active dog would be a lot happier in an apartment

German Shepherd vs Irish wolfhound?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

an Irish wolfhound would be no match for a German Shepard it wouldn't have the speed ,toughnes or heart these dogs are not violent

Clearly this person doest;t know much about IW.

IWH wouldn't have the speed? - They were breed for coursing deer, wolves, and horses back in in the dark ages for dragging men and knights of horse.

Toughness - They were not only breed for battle, but for killing WOLVES... SOLO not in a pack

Heart - IWH are some of the most Loyal, courage's dog that have ever lived. Fact. Kings and queens would have packs of them as they would guard them with their lives.

People still use IWH's to hunt Coyotes which they do very well, on there own, and also boars.

Fact - You take a working IWH used for (coursing, hunting) keeping in mind the average male height is not 36" and weighting in at 140 - 160lb put it up against a working GS the GS will lose, and quickly... I would say he would run away with its tail between its legs, but when you have a 140lb + sighthound chasing you down, with the lung capacity which near matches a wolve, you ain't gonna get very far.

They are people dogs...and I love ALL of mine, but never underestimate the power of this giant...EVER

Irish Wolfhounds are probably the strongest, bravest and loyallist of all dogs. They would beat a German shepherd for sport.I'm Irish so I know :)

When should you be able to start training a German Shepherd?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

German Shepherds are incredibly smart dogs. On a scale of 1 to 5 ( 1 being the least smart and 5 being ther smartest) a German Shepherd is 5. I would recommend that you start training the dog at about 2 or 3 months. This way your dog can learn young and do more in its lifetime. You have to be stern but gentle because you do not want to upset the dog. You should have a good relationship with the dog too before you begin any harder trainings. Dogs are very smart, and they can tell when you are mad at them or happy or pround. In the facility where I work, the dogs must be 12 weeks or older. The dogs learn well when rewarded properly. I hope this can be helpful. You may also want to look for other dog training books to help guide you along the way. Some suggestions for German Shepherds are as follows: Dog Breed Handbooks German Shepherd by Bruce Fogle, DVM; Animal Planet German Shepherd Dogs by Susan M. Ewing;German Shepherd Dog by Susan Samms; The German Shepherd Dog by Diane Morgan.

How big do German Shepherds get?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The full adult size of your GSD will depend in large part on the genetic background of its parents. Adult males should range between 24-26" at the shoulder blade, females from 22-24". Males within the standard may weigh anywhere from 65-90 lbs. depending on their bloodlines. Females may weigh anywhere from 50-75 lbs. Although your pup will reach close to adult height by 10-18 months, he will continue to fill out until up to 3 years old.

Who is better guard dog bull mastiff or a German shepherd?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A German Shepherd is a naturally a guarding dog with excellent skills.

They will restrain your intruder and won't actually maul the intruder and normally not inflict deadly harm to an intruder.

Whereas a Bull Mastiff would probably actually aim to kill someone if provoked. You obviously don't want a lawsuit on your case.

What is the difference in German Shepherds and American German Shepherds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are some very notable differences between an American line German Shepherd and a European line German Shepherd (GSD). These dogs are bred under different ideals, standards, and environments, and therefore it's very understandable that differences do arise in American type and European type bloodlines.

In Europe, GSDs fall under two main categories: German show dog lines and working lines (this is an oversimplification as there are many lines, but these lines explain things nicely). Show line dogs are bred to have a certain look as well as certain working qualities, as is required by the breeding association over there. In general, these dogs are of thick, medium build or are stockier in stature, with a shorter nose and usually come with a black and red color coat. A distinguishing feature is that these dogs' backs curve downward towards their hind feet. This is called a roach back or banana back, which is said to give the dogs greater rear leg drive. This is controversial though as working dogs do not have this trait (explained below). These dogs are intelligent and courageous, but can be harder in temperament and/or be more aggressive.

Conversely, working lines in Europe are bred for working ability only, thus, their look is of less importance and can vary greatly. These dogs are of medium build, moderate nose and ear length, and have straight backs. Colors and other features vary. They tend to have higher drive (they are more intense and/or more energetic) and 'doing a job' is bred into them. These are the military and police dogs you see out there, and they are extremely intelligent and athletic. As working ability is of top importance, they tend to be healthier than other blood lines (they have straight backs, healthy hips, etc). Again, their temperaments can be very hard and not suitable for certain families as companions.

In America, most dogs are used as companion dogs, and GSDs here are breed towards that purpose more often than in Europe. That means lower drive and working ability; this is a plus to most families, but a negative for military work, for example. That can also mean they are less intelligent and/or less courageous - or they could just be 'big softies' and great dogs - it really depends. In America, there is no central breeding organization and any two GSDs can be bread together, and as long as they have their papers, their pups will be considered pure bred; without oversight, however, the quality of dogs can suffer and be afflicted by more health problems as a whole. These dogs tend to be longer, taller, narrower in chest and fine boned, with longer noses and ears. They have a classic black and tan coat. A distinct characteristic is their backs: they slope at a straight angle towards the hind feet. This is said to create a more pleasing and efficient 'flying trot' (the name for how a GSD looks while running to herd animals). This characteristic is similar to a banana back in that it is controversial and not found in working lines.

The questions "which is better" isn't really a questions, since each bloodline is better at some things, worse than others. Additionally, there is a huge variation in each bloodline and there are many more bloodlines out there. There are plenty of American dogs that break this mold and work in police work; there are tons of European dogs that are great family pets. Essentially, the most important thing is buying for a reputable breeder. Ideally, they will be breeding for the betterment of the breed with health as one of their main concerns. As long as you find that, and that the breeder produces dogs that match you and your lifestyle, you will be just fine.
