What do springer spaniels usually die from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Our English Springer Spaniel is almost 11 years old. He is a dog that we rescued 10 years ago that has been a very good and loving member of our family. Unfortunately, because of his previous owner, he has never allowed us to properly groom or inspect his paws. Our Vet will only treat him if he is muzzled. He reluctantly allows us to clean his ears. He is a large male around 65 pounds. Liver and white. He has recently developed very scaly skin with an almost rough feel to it. His hair is thinning on his entire body. It has always been a major battle to trim his nails. He is very protective of his personal space especially his paws.

He now has developed a large swelling on his back left paw. It looks like a bubble between his nails that just developed virtually overnight. He does not have other symptoms, his appetite is good, he seems OK but carries his paw in the air now when he walks.

Please provide any diagnosis, treatment or help.

Thank you!

What is the temperament of a Welsh Springer Spaniel?

User Avatar

The English Cocker is described as merry and affectionate with an equable disposition. He's playful, trainable, and friendly toward people (although sometimes reserved with strangers) and other dogs. English Cockers will bark to let you know someone's approaching, so they're good watchdogs, but as typical spaniels they'll happily show the burglar where the silver is.

A good name for a black and white springer spaniel pup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

My grandparents springer spaniels are called Bruno (as in Frank Bruno the boxer), and Sumer. They are great names, for springer spaniels.

Sparky is also a good name. If your dog is liver and brown, you could call him/her liver. Maybe Blackie if he/she's black.

I have been asking that question for a while and then decided to create a list of Springer names. You can find it at: www.love-springer-spaniels.com/springer-spaniel-names.html:

There are over 470 names of springers belonging to other people just like you.

Are welsh springer spaniels bad for people with dog allergies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I don't think springer spaniels are a good choice for allergy sufferers. They are large dogs that have a lot of hair and they also shed quite a bit of dander. My parents have an English springer spaniel and I get skin allergies sometimes when I pet the dog and she makes my eyes itchy ever once in a while. I own a small rat terrier and have slight allergies to this dog but not to the extent as the springer because she's about 1/5th the size. I think the main concern is if you know you have allergies to dogs it might not be worth the risk to purchase one, especially not a large dog that will give you more dander than a smaller dog. At first I was really sad that I couldn't buy a springer (due to allergies) but the smaller dog has been just as fun, energetic and loving as the springer is.

What age should you breed a springer spaniel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hi, I have an English Springer Spaniel and honestly when your able to bring him home you should start walking him. You need to teach him/her to walk on a leash at a young age.

Try little and often when they are under six months old (too much walking can damage their developing bones) so make sure they get plenty of rest in between. Try to also involve obedience training on each walk.
