George Brown was born in Alloa, Scotland, on November 29, 1818, and was the son of Peter Brown and Isabella Mackenzie. After managing a printing business with his father in New York, he immigrated to Canada in 1843. Later he founded his very successful newspaper "The Toronto Globe" in 1844. He married the daughter of Thomas Nelson, the publisher, in 1862 and had two sons and three daughters with her.

George Brown was a staggering journalist and had a dominating personality, which helped him put his ideas out in a truly intimidating way. However, he could also take very statesmanship views on some topics, so he was pretty well rounded.

George Brown was the formidable and smart editor of this political journal, and many people today say he had a strong spirit. When he founded his newspaper, his political career took off. First as a bi-weekly, then a tri-weekly, and lastly as a daily news paper, this newspaper became the leading Reform newspaper in the province of Canada! Even today, he is still known for his strong political love, and most of all, for his newspaper, "The Globe".

George Brown used "The Globe" to write articles to attack the slavery issues in the United States, and in 1850 George Brown helped found the Anti-slavery Society of Canada. This is just one of the many things he accomplished with "The Globe", and due to his strong political reach and passion, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Canada as a Reform member.

In October 1864, he played an important role in the Quebec conference; the conference sorted out the details of a "federal union" and George Brown helped it all come about. Unfortunately, he resigned from the government even before confederation was final due to the inability to work with some of his colleagues; in fact the worst of all his enemies was John A. MacDonald. Between both of them, there had been years of bitter and personal enmity. The reason for that was unknown, but after George Brown resigned, he wasn't as prominently spoken in Parliament, even when he was elected for Senate in 1873, he spoke little in that house. In his own country though, he was a force to be reckoned with. After all, he was the leader that drove Sandfield MacDonald from office in Ontario!

Sadly, George Brown died, on May 9th, 1880, from a bullet wound inflicted by a discharged employee. During his lifetime, he loved his career greatly. He was one of the leaders in Parliament, and was instrumental in the formation of Confederation. His political journal the "Globe," changed Canada for the better. We can all thank George Brown, for his dominant personality and his perseverance.
