Muntenia (Wallachia) was ruled by the Ottomans till the War of Independence (1877), and the same thing happened with Moldavia. There were also regions stolen (temporarily or permanently) by the Russians. Before, during and after the Second World War the Soviets and the Hungarians sliced off large portions of the country, while the Germans occupied us (with the Power's consent). After the war came the Soviets and they stayed a while (they left in the 50s).
The Roman Empire had conquered and colonized the Dacian Kingdom in 106 AD. The pursuit was, off course, the Gold. Dacia was an El Dorado of Antiquity, and therefore many Romans settled. The new people formed was called "Romani" or "Rumani", meaning "coming from Rome".
