History of baking

The History of Baking First Baking Course Ever Find Some Grain, a Mortar, and a Pestle Way back in the year 8,000 B.C., some clever dudes in Egypt started crushing grain with a mortar and pestle. You can bet they were surprised when after a few twists and grinds, a German chocolate cake appeared. Just kidding. They only managed to make a rudimentary form of unleavened bread sort of like a Mexican tortilla--but it was still a pretty big accomplishment. They shared this information, creating something of a baking course.

Baking Class 5000 years later Go Search for Wild Yeasts In approximately 3000 B.C. the Egyptians saw that during warm periods certain wild yeasts were attracted to multi-grain flour mixes. They were inspired to start experimenting with those wild yeasts until they came up with leavened bread Genius. These experiments and successes created some gatherings not unlike a current baking class.

Want a Baking Job in 150 B.C.? Join the Roman Guild Yes, the next big baking millstone--I mean milestone--came in 150 B.C. Baking guilds were formed in Rome and wealthy Romans started insisting on more expensive white bread.

The rest is history. Baking jobs became available after those first bakeries sprung up in Rome. Bakers started creating different types of baked goods to attract customers. Baking spread throughout Europe, with each country adding to the baked goods repertoire until someone figured out how to make the chocolate chip cookie. What a day that must have been.

Baking is an ancient art. It was practiced by almost all peoples before they had writing. Put a mixture of pounded moistened grains and/or other things on a hot rock and that's baking. History suggests that Egyptians learned the art from the Babylonians, which is almost certain. But consider that even as primitive peoples used hot rocks to warm themselves at night, they likely used them in cooking and baking. These primitives were smart and inventive - or we wouldn't be here. The availability of different local foodstuffs and the creativity of the baker made for a wide variety of wonderful things to eat. As cooking methods and ingredient selection became more sophisticated, different appliances or "constructions" appeared leading to a more complete enclosure. The "traditional" oven we know stands at the end of a very long line of technical evolution. Though some ovens today may have openings and no "doors" on them like the ones we may be used to using, they do trap heat. Certainly the ovens are traditional fixtures, whether built from clay, brick or steel and glass, and, when used by a skilled artisan, produce fabulous goodies in a range of types and forms, these being limited only by the availability of edible items and imagination. Regardless of the appliance and whether electricity, natural gas, solar energy, or burning wood or other combustables is used as a heat source, a clever individual with a bit of patience and practice can produce a variety of fabulous baked goods in a manner that has roots in the stone age.

The brownie first appeared in public during the 1893 Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago, Illinois. A chef at the city's Palmer House Hotel created the confection after Bertha Palmer requested a dessert for ladies attending the fair; it should be, she said, smaller than a piece of cake and easily eaten from boxed lunches. These first brownies featured an apricot glaze and walnuts, and they are still being made at the hotel according to the original recipe.
