Meditation helps strengthen awareness. Meditation helps us to see that we are not the mind, not the emotions, not the body. Meditation brings a sense of calm. Meditation helps us to see that fulfilling the desires of the mind will not bring a lasting sense of contentment.

And all of these things change the way we act in our everyday lives. When a business deal falls through, we do not take it as hard. When someone cuts us off on the highway, we laugh instead of yell. When we have an hour between appointments, we stop and breathe into our bellies and enjoy simply being, rather than playing Video Games.

There have been many studies that show that meditation lowers blood pressure, provides other health benefits, and can increase the amount of "calm" in a person's life.

That said, the ultimate goal of meditation is to help a person to "know" themselves in a very deep way. Sometimes, as the layers of the onion of personality are peeled away, one can see some pretty intense stuff. It is for this reason that Buddha instructed his disciples to, "Love yourself, then watch." First, love yourself, accept yourself, no matter what you see. Then bring your watchfulness, your awareness, to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations.

Yes. It is the chief practice required for awakening. The Buddha said in THE DHAMMAPADA: "Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance . . .There can be no meditation for those who are not wise, and no wisdom for those who do not meditate" (Easwaran, tr.).

Meditation is highly regarded in Buddhism. However, various schools of Buddhism use meditation in different ways. In a Tibetan tradition, meditators might use a mantra which is repeated to help focus their mind and which embodies the truth of Buddhist teaching. In a Theravada tradition, mindfulness might be developed by paying attention to the breath, or to body and feelings, or the current of ideas and images that moves through the mind as meditators sit and observe themselves. But what Buddhists get from meditation is more than just calm. For more check out cutt. ly/bxbbGQs (Just remove the space)

How do Buddhists devote their lives to Buddhism?

The only correct way to devote your life to the Buddha is to follow what he taught. He taught a practical meditation technique called Vipassana Meditation to experience the impermanence of everything including you -- meaning your body and the mind. This is the crux of his teaching. You are fortunate that you can learn this technique by joining a ten day residential Vipassana Course. These courses are conducted across the globe without any fee. All expenses are borne by the meditators who have learned this skill in the past. If you have "experienced" impermanence inside you and lead a life staying with this feeling, you are actually following what the Buddha wanted you to learn. Reading Tipitakas or worshiping an idol of Buddha is fine for inspiration, but practice the technique rediscovered and taught by him. Google search for "Vipassana" will show the places near to you where you can join the course. The headquarters of Vipassana International Academy is in India at Igatpuri near Mumbai.
