Can you not turn your ignition key to the RUN position and select the neutral
position while holding your foot on the brake pedal ?
Use you key to open the lock.
You car battery operate many items in your car. The neutral safety switch locks the trans in Park until the key is turned and the brake is pressed. The Cobalt has a battery in the trunk so open the trunk and lift up the cover and jump the car.
If the battery is dead it will not allow the key to return to locked position. Thus trapping you key in the ignition.
With another battery connected to the dead one or what a battery charger.
well, i have a Chevy Cobalt so it might be the same. There is a little lever by your left foot in the driver's side. Hope that helps :)
Weak or dead battery? Loose or corroded battery cables? Engine seized? Bad starter? Bad starter solenoid? Bad neutral switch?

Jump the car from another car battery or hook a charger to the battery.
Insert the key like usual and press the brake before shifting out of park and the shift into neutral like usual. You must count the shift positions if its a digi displayed shift pattern.
The battery in your key fob is going dead, or is weak.
It could be any of a few things: starter keyswitch neutral safety switch poor connection DEAD battery (but it would need to be really dead to not even click) try starting it with a screw driver on the starter
