Many famous musicians came up through Goodman's band and went on to bigger

His band was one of the first to feature several different players.

Benny Goodman, born on May 30, 1909 was known as the King of Swing. He became a member of the American Federation of Musicians when he was only 14. When he was just 16 he was hired by the Ben Pollack band and moved to LA. Once the Great Depression hit he left the band to move to NYC and begin recording sessions. Shortly after that he began working with John Hammond, a famous jazz promoter. Hammond had Benny record with trombonist Jack Teagarden and drummer Gene Krupa, the result of that session was the onset of Benny's national popularity. In August of 1935 Benny's band would play at the Palomar Ballroom in LA in a gig that was so amazing and sensational that it would mark the beginning of the years that Benny would reign as King of Swing.

His influence on jazz clarinetists is unquestioned and universal: like Louis Armstrong on the Trumpet, Goodman determined the very shape of a jazz approach to his instrument.
