When the government of the Roman Empire left Western Europe to the invaders during the 5th century, large tracts of land fell into the hands of new kings. The old structures of the Roman government vanished and ultimately, these were replaced by the new feudal system. The feudal system or feudalism in the Middle Ages referred to the relations between the Western European ruling class and the knights and landlords, who alone had the capability to provide horses and steel armors needed for the defense of the land. The more powerful lords, the king (who could be considered sole owner of all lands in the kingdom), gave protection and help to lesser lords called "vassals". The vassals were also granted lands called "fiefs". In exchange for this, the vassals were required to render military service, tribute in the form of money or harvest, and lifelong loyalty. It was through this that the aristocrats who reigned Europe in the following centuries came into being.
