Since Europe (primarily the UK) has always been the ancestral background of the United States, Europe has always been a priority in all wars; including WWII and Vietnam. Examples:

1. Defeating Germany first in WWII, was actually "saving Great Britain first", since only Britain and the Soviets were the primary combatants in Europe at the time, and the USSR was holding it's own against Germany, and as Churchill said, "Britain stood alone!" Therefore, the UK had to be saved (first).

2. In Vietnam, with the exceptions of the M113 APC/ACAV, M551 Sheridan, M16 Rifle, Swift Boat, PBRs, Alpha riverine boats, and aerial gunships such as the Spectre and AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships; just about every single machine for war (Jets, Tanks, Ships) was designed & built specifically for war in Europe.

The M113, M551, and M16 in paragraph 2 may have been placed upon the drawing board for European warfare initially, but they were quickly re-drawn for Vietnam, then constructed...then immediately fielded in Vietnam; 1961 for the M113 ACAV & M16 Rifle, and 1969 for the M551. All three were experimental in Vietnam.

Why did the United States misunderstand the nature of the war it was fighting in Vietnam?

Because the US Army manages US wars; the US Army has jurisdiction over land wars. USAF & USN SUPPORT the US Army. The US Army always preferred to study Europe for future wars; the US Army absolutely did not want to fight any Asian Wars. Money (Defense Budgets) were 99% allocated for European Wars. Asia represented a dirty filthy ruthless war fought without mercy. Europe represented chivalry and the fine art of hi-tech weapons.

What countries were involved in war during the 1930's besides the United States?

The US was involved with NO wars in the 1930's. There were two wars going on in the '30s. One in Europe and one in Asia; Germany was moving thru Europe and Japan was moving thru Asia. Italy was experimenting down in Africa (and having a hard time doing that; believe it or not...Africans were fighting with SPEARS against Italian tanks).

What was the United States point of view and the rest of Asia point of view in the Vietnam war?

The point of view from the US and the rest of Asia was, we all knew it was "a communist thing"...the cold war. What could anyone do about the cold war? We had to live with it. When it came to the "shooting" part, during the Korean & Vietnam Wars, we had to live with it. When men started getting drafted to "participate" in it...then the riots and protests began.
