Though the Puritan colonists had fled England due to the lack of tolerance on the part of the state Anglican Church, their behavior in the Massachusetts Bay colony suggests a mass intolerance on their part as well. Colonists drove off dissenting minister Roger Williams, who then founded Rhode Island and welcomed other dissenting voices (many of them early Baptists or ), such as the early proto-feminist and theologian Anne Hutchinson, whom the Puritans had also banished from Massachusetts Bay.

The lack of religious toleration affected the politics in the Massachusetts bay Colony because a few people like Anne Hutchinson, Thomas Hooker, and John Wheelright did not agree with Puritan beliefs. They were expelled from Massachusetts, and later settled in in new colonies.

How were the religious groups treated in the Persian Empire?

With great tolerance. The idea of religious warfare and repression is a product of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religious groups which proclaimed superiority. Other ancient and modern religions generally recognised that their gods were the same, with different local names, and so did not feel it necessary to opress and try to convert the beliefs of others.
