Answer

Northerners who were business owners bought cotton from the south that was grown and picked by slaves. Factory workers in the north feared that freed slaves might take their jobs for less money. Abolitionists were against slavery. Quakers and Christians were too.

--Northerners thought slavery was bad. Once Uncle Tom's Cabin came out, they became steadfast in their beliefs. The Irish and German immigrants didn't want the slaves to be freed, because the slaves would get paid less than the Irish and German, so the immigrants would lose their jobs. The South wanted slaves because they had to grow cotton and other crops.--

The question about slavery had been an issue when the Framers of the US Constitution gathered to work out a new republic style government. There were only 13 colonies and since the non-slave states believed a united US with all 13 colonies became states by ratifying the new Constitution, slavery was left alone. The only deal was that the importation of slaves would end in ten years.during the antebellum years, the North's beliefs about slavery were mixed. Also, early on in the 19th century, Great Britain had yet to abolish slavery in the West Indies and elsewhere within its world empire.

Many Northerners did not even think about slavery some thousand of miles away from their homes.

Slavery was "accepted" in some cases in the North but it was never endorsed.

To add to everyone's confusion about slavery, the US Supreme Court in 1857, made a decision based on the Dredd Scott case that slavery was constitutional.

As the US Civil War progressed, President Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure to say that slaves in the rebelling states were "free". In the border states of Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware, slavery existed throughout the war. The consensus among most Americans after the war was to abolish slavery and that was accomplished. There remained the widespread consensus that Blacks were not equal to whites in the US.Despite laws and amendments, it took years for Black equality to be recognized.
