World War I was responsible for the deaths of about 120,000 Americans and over 200,000 wounded soldiers. It also cost the US a lot of money, which shoved the US into an economic crisis that could be blamed for the crash of the Stock Market in 1929, causing the Great Depression. WWI also threatened the national security of the US. The US wished to remain neutral during the war but was constantly thwarted by Germany. Germany ordered its navy to strike down any Allied ship, which caused the deaths of hundreds of Americans aboard British cruiseliners. But the direct cause of the US's joining of WWI was the Zimmerman Telegram, sent by Germany to Mexico. It offered Mexico aid if they attacked the US, and if they won they would receive most of the land they lost during the Mexican-American War. Of course, Mexico did not accept as the US was much too powerful for them, but the US had to do something because it was just embarrassed globally. They declared war on Germany and were a major reason why the Allies won WWI.
