Not diverse, at all. Most of the settlers who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony were middle-class English Protestants of the Puritan sect. Between 1630 and 1640, approximately 10,000 colonists came to Massachusetts.
In 1641, when the English Civil War began, the influx dropped off sharply. Immigration was also slowed by the increasing frequency of Indian attacks, which culminated in King Philip's War in 1675. The population continued to multiply rapidly, but from a relatively fixed number of families. The closed nature of Puritan society contributed to their isolation. During the first 50 years, Baptists and Quakers, in particular, and anyone else that the Puritans didn't like, were definitely not welcome in Massachusetts and often driven out by force.
Even until the 1850s, a large portion, possibly the majority, of the population of Massachusetts was descended from those original Puritan families.
