== == Records of marriages and divorces are generally kept by states, at least for the last 100 years or so. The National Center for Health Statistics has information on obtaining birth, death, marriage, and divorce records. Specifically, look at their page "Where to write for vital records" and select your state. Some of this information is also available online through Genealogy.com, if you pay for a membership. You might also try checking with the historical library in the area where your ancestor lived. "I found the will of my great great grandfather by this method and discovered I am a decendant of he and his house-keeper." Many early marriage records have been filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and the microfilm can be "ordered in" at any of the numerous Family History Centers worldwide (branches libraries of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City) for a small fee (about $5.50). To see what's available, visit PeopleRecordsReview.com and click on "Explore the Family History Library Catalog." Click on "Place" and type the name of the county in which the marriage took place in the top search box. When the results appear, follow the link to "Vital Records" to see what's available. (Most marriage records seem to have been kept on a county level.)

Marriage records are deemed public information and are available to the public. There are several states that provide access to search for marriage records online. Some even provide this service for free, but others will charge a small fee. If there is no online search available for your particular location, you can contact either the clerk, recorder, or probate court in the location where the marriage occurred.

It depends on the state and county where the divorce was handled. Generally, divorce records are public information, but not all states and counties have put their court records online. It is more likely that divorce records will be online if the court where the divorce was filed is in a major city, but even if not, it is always worth checking!

If you know the state and county where the divorce was handled, finding out whether that county offers divorce records online is relatively simple. Visit the CourtReference related link, pick the appropriate state, and then use the Court Resource Category drop-down menu to select Search Court Case Records. Some states offer statewide court record databases, which will be listed at the top of the results page if they exist in that state. If not, scroll down to the appropriate county, and any online court records search options for that county will be listed.

Some online court records searches may be free and some are fee-based.

If you are unable to find the records you are looking for online, your next best step is to contact the court clerk in the county that handled the divorce. On the CourtReference related link, there is a drop-down menu where you can select county information - you will be able to find Court Clerk contact information there.

In the US you contact the state Vital Statistics Office. in most of the other countries you have register offices where you can obtain them.

You can also obtain a copy in the United States from the town, city or county clerk in charge of keeping vital records where the marriage was performed.

Marriage records are usually held in the courthouse in the county in which the marriage took place. If the county does not exist any longer, a nearby county likely has the records.
