== == "IF you have to ask about how to do it, you shouldn't try to do it. Pay a trained mechanic to do it properly, and be happy that you didn't make a big mistake and ruin your car." ~Whoever posted the writing above this is DEAD WRONG. I knew nothing about cars and just bought a 97 camaro that had a cracked cylinder head. I asked around on the internet, read all I could, and finally removed the cylinder head, got it machined, and put it in, all in a month's time. You can save tons of money by doing it yourself. And you learn a little something too. To answer the question, I don't know about all cars, but at least on my 97 Camaro, it was fairly easy. I remove the drive belt

(the big black belt spinning in your car; to remove it, find the tensioner ( a metal wheel that seems to only have no other purpose then to put tension on the belt) and rotate the nut on the tensioner clockwise; this will allow you to remove the belt) unbolted three bolts, and disconnected two electrical connectors to remove the alternator. Obviously installation is the reverse. Do however get a haines repair manual for your car, in case there are special instructions. Also, if you know someone who has one, borrow a torque wrench...there are torque settings for the alternator bolts that you SHOULD follow. -- Having posted the original question and later following through with the alternator replacement, I can say it was remarkably easy for someone who knows almost nothing about cars. For anyone else who may need to know, here are the detailed instructions. If you are very unfamiliar with the parts, just remember careful what was removed from where, and where things to back in/on to before you take them off.

The entire procedure will probably take you more about 30-45 minutes, but will save you a few hundred dollars.

1) A replacement alternator for the Camaro shouldn't cost more than $150, if not less.

2) Before doing anything DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

3) Disconnect the wire or wires from the back of the alternator. This is usually a very simple process but if you're unsure as to where they go, label them as you take them loose.

3) You know need to loosen the drive belt, which is usually the toughest part all together. You'll need to move it enough to slip the belt off the pulley. you need to either remove the belt, or carefully slide it off from the alternator. Find the belt tensioner (a metal wheel located in near the middle of the assembly), and turn the tension nut clockwise to loosen the drive belt.

4) Remove the 3 bolts that secure the alternator to the car, and now the alternator should life out fairly easily.

5) Seat the new alternator in it's place, replace the identical electrical connection, and bolt in back with the original 3 bolts you originally removed.

6) Place the drive belt back around the alternator. If you took it off and not sure where it goes back, there is usually a detailed diagram of where it goes just in front of the engine. Allow around a half inch of slack when tightened.

7) Reconnect your battery, and be amazed out how easily your car turns over now!

Have a 1997 buick lesabre is it hard to replace it and where is it located can you please help me i need a new alternator?

Passengers side of the engine. It is the component with the little black fan. You need to take off the serpentine belt, then take out the wire to the alternator. then you need to unbolt it, and then replace it with the new one, plug it back in, and put the serpentine belt back on. Not very difficult.

How much would it cost to replace an alternator including the labor charge for a Nissan Xterra?

Was quoted $500 to replace the Alternator and battery yesterday (May 2009) which seems a little high (they wanted $100 for the battery and $20 to put it in so you can assume $380 parts and labour for the alternator I guess)

How do you replace a 1998 Chevy Metro alternator belt?

On most cars, the upper alternator-mount usually has an elongated hole or slot with a bolt that goes thru it and the alternator-housing. To loosen/tighten the alternator-belt, just loosen this bolt a little and the top of the alternator can then be swiveled to alter tension on the belt ...when the belt is tight enough (you can only move it 1/4" when pushing at a point that's equal distance between 2 of the pulleys, hold it in that position and tighten the bolt. Sometimes if alternator is difficult to move, it can be pried (and held in position) with wood-handle of a hammer (or other non-metallic item) placed between alternator and the mount.

Does the front axle need to come outto replace the alternator on a 2005 ford escape?

Location of temperature sensor on a 20003 trailblazer 4.2?

it is on the drivers side behind the alternator right above the thermostat. you will need to remove the serpentine belt and the alternator for easier access. bottom bolt for the alternator is a little difficult to remove bcuz of the a/c hose and oh you will also have to remove the engine hoist hook above the alternator to access the bolts for the alternator.

How do you replace the voltage regulator in an 98 Olds regency 1986 model?

It's inside the alternator. If you haven't already done one (and evidently you haven't) it would probably be best for you to just replace the whole thing. Some special tools are required and it can get a little overwhelming for the first timer.

How do you remove alternator from olds ciera 1996?

You remove four bolts from alternator taking off all hoses and remembering where you took off bolt plates(small plates that screws go into). You then remove three bolts on passenger side of alternator. Take off drive belt. You will have to replace it. You will use the tension pulley to replace the belt. It takes a little force.

It is a little tricky. I would suggest buying a haynes or a chilton manual. You can find them at autozone.

Why won't the windshield washers work on an 1989 Camaro RS?

Most likely the little pump in the washer fluid tank is bad. These are fairly cheap and easy to replace.

1985 Nissan pickup alternator replaced - positive wiring harness is melting Why?

If it is melting over a period of time, try replacing the connector on the wire at the back of the alternator, or replace the wire and connectors. A little more info would be nice!!!
