I recently changed the filter in my 2000 MPV and, if the 2002 hasn't changed which I doubt it has, this seems, initially, to be an easy procedure. However, the filter box is situated in such a way as to make pulling the old out and putting the new in very difficult. Overall if you're half way decent with tools and know your way around a car you'll be able to do it in about 20 to 30 minutes vice 30 seconds for my other car, a Honda Civic. Geee Thanks for all the useful information,, Not. Please remove this as an answer, it's just a complaint and has no real value resolving the issue.
from what I remember, remove the shroud that fits near the wiper linkages the filter should be located in there. Bonnet up!
Which air filter are you referring to? The engine air filter, or the cabin air filter?

To change the air filter on the 2002 VW Beetle, just remove the air breather cover by unscrewing the center nut. Then, remove the filter and add the new filter in its place. Place the cover back over the filter and replace the nut.
first you must remove the air filter then the air filter box it is held on by 3 or 4 bolts after taking out air filter box you will be able to access the fuel filter
