You need to check the family court records in the county where they live. If they have moved around you my need to check several counties. A divorce is filed in the county where the couple resided at the time of the divorce.

Same place you apply for a marriage license you go to file for a divorce. If your ex got the divorce without your signature you have to find out where they filed it. They would have had to make public notice of this in a local newspaper before finalizing anything to give you a chance to respond. If you knew of the divorce proceedings, then you would know where they were filed and can get a copy of the papers. You should have been mailed a copy either way..
question
the marriage lasted 10 years, the date is unclear, separate coast. he filed in Virginia. the papers were lost in a storage locker. the date is need for important papers. it should be between 1969-1970. that would be a lot of paper from another state to go thru, my residence is California

You cannot marry until legally divorced.
You can still get divorced, which as you know, you need to do before you try to get remarried (bigamy is bad). You need to use "due dilligence" to try to find your wife and once the court is satisfied that you have done this you can proceed with the divorce in the same manner as if she was a part of the process. The court will issue a default divorce and you will in fact be divorced.
